The Garage Gym

You might need a new approach in the gym:

The gym isn't getting harder… you might just need a different approach.

If you've been showing up and still feel like something isn't clicking… you're not alone.

And the problem might not be what you think it is.

It's not that you've lost it or are too old… or that you just need to work harder.

It might be that the approach you've been using no longer fits the chapter of life you're actually in.

Chapters to life ?

In your 20s, the gym was probably simple. Lots of time, fewer obligations, faster recovery, and youth on your side.

But the thing about chapters is that they change…

and when they do, the smartest thing you can do is adjust your approach rather than fight the transition.

The person trying to train exactly like they did at 23 while managing a career, a family, and everything else life throws at them in their 30s and 40s is setting themselves up for frustration (and maybe injury!).

Not because they're any less capable, but because the context is totally different now.

Why do you actually go to the gym?

This is a good question worth asking yourself.

Why do I go to the gym ?

We believe that fitness is a tool.

Used to pursue the best version of yourself.

Sure, you may do HYROX, run marathons, (or want to do something like it).

But - odds are that is not the main thing in your life.

It is a really cool, fun, and motivating experience.

But it does not pay your bills, take care of your children, or do anything for you at work (other than have something cool to talk about).

Fitness events are awesome - and we encourage you to do them ! - but we don’t believe they are the end all be all of why we go to the gym.

Why WE go to the gym (speaking for ourselves a moment) is to keep ourselves healthy, sharp, and energetic for everything that happens OUTSIDE the gym.

When we are healthy, sharp, and energetic, we:

-show up better for the people we care about
-are more focused at work
-generally act friendlier are less stressed (etc)

But - it can be very easy to get into a routine to feel we have to go to the gym for specific results, race finishes, or numbers on the scale.

All of those are great answers - but sometimes based on the chapter of life you’re in - might not be the best answer for you at this time.

The good and bad news ?

Only you will know what is best for you.

We just encourage you to ask yourself why you go to the gym, so you can find the best way to train for it.

One of our members said it better than we can

Billy Davis is a member of The Garage Gym.

In a recent conversation he talked about exactly this - the value of showing up even when life doesn't give you much to work with. Ten minutes. Fifteen or twenty.

Whatever you have that day.

Something is always better than nothing.

And beyond the physical - Billy talks about how keeping the commitments you make to yourself in the gym carries over into every other area of your life.

When you do what you said you were going to do, even on the hard days, even when it's just a short session, it builds something. A standard you hold yourself to and a confidence that compounds.

Watch Billy talk about it here.

Billy is the man and we are incredibly lucky to have him a part of The Garage Gym.

Tangible and Intangible Resources

Mindset is one thing and it’s great to ask yourself why you go to the gym to wrap your head around it.

From there though - a great thing you can do at the gym is follow a plan.

One of the most common reasons people plateau or feel like they're spinning their wheels is that they don't have a plan. They show up, figure it out, and repeat. And over time that lack of structure can kill progress - and then - your desire to go to the gym because you aren’t seeing progress.

Following a structured program - even a very simple one - keeps you accountable and ensures you're progressing over time rather than just winging it.

It also removes the mental friction of figuring out what to do every time you walk in.

In a world riddled with plans (and the fancy AI machine) there is no shortage of free and paid opportunities to follow a plan specific to a goal you’re working towards.

You can literally cue Claude AI with "I have 15 minutes today please write me a total body workout" and have a great workout to do... no excuses.

At The Garage Gym we have a handful of plans to follow and encourage members to find one that fits their goals and the chapter of life they’re in.

The Intangible Shift

Lots of people get caught up on personal bests, numbers on the scale, or the metaphoric ‘keeping up with the Joneses’ in the gym they go to.

Let’s make something clear quick:

Being ambitious and having goals is great.

But depending on the chapter of life you’re in - the time and responsibilities you have - you may not be able to tackle big gym goals and simply showing up for 15 minutes is a huge win.

The approach you take to your gym experience should be based on your goals, the lifestyle you want, and the time you have.

Success in the gym looks different for everyone - whether that is chasing PRs or simply feeling good to run around with your kids after they get out of school.

There are no wrong answers - just the one that is best for you at this time.

So - why are you going to the gym ?
